The first thing that struck me when I read "As a Man Thinketh by James Allen, was the fact that the book did not focus on the many things that go wrong in human life - whether as regards relationships with others or just regular circumstances, rather it focuses on how everyone can make the most of their thoughts to benefit them in their daily life. When you go through unpleasant stuff, what is your usual reaction? Whenever negative thoughts make an appearance in your mind, how do you react? These are rather important questions that will help you realize if you are focused on the right or wrong things. In his book, Allen does not say, hey, if you are passing through something crazy, you should ask why and put on a “woe is me” expression because after all, you are the only one going through that. Instead, he tells us to focus on inward heaven, which will eventually become evident in our outward lives. This book teaches a lot of lessons when it comes to the mind and how to condition it to reflect positivity in everyday life. Here are a few lessons we can all take away from James Allen’s book; Your thought-force will shape your character, circumstances, and destiny – I can just imagine how many people will roll their eyes at this expression. But think about it! It is the same thing as a farmer who has no other source of income except his maize farm. He will till it and plant and water it until the harvest comes and he reaps the produce for sale or consumption. According to Allen, when you condition your thoughts to reflect positivity, your actions will always be geared towards success. Garbage in, garbage out – As far as our health and overall wellbeing are concerned, what we think is directly proportional to the end results. We must be careful to always lead ourselves from inside out, towards getting the best out of our health and every other aspect of our lives. Visions make the world beautiful – It is very common to find many people who have neglected their dreams because they believe the dreams are not achievable. However, it is true that life is made more beautiful because of those who have dared to follow their visions and dreams. According to Allen, your thoughts as regards your dreams are only the first step. What are you doing to make sure those dreams come true and make the world even more beautiful? Your motive, whether secret or known will determine your outcome – When you outline goals for yourself, what are your motives? According to Allen, once your motives are clear, whether they are selfish or not, will determine how you will end up. If your mindset is of self – you will eventually crash. However, if your mindset is selfless – you will fly high. Never mind the false positives and false negatives that may initially make an appearance. This could be related to this age when the bad seems to fare better in life than those who seek the good of everyone. As a Man Thinketh by James Allen was first written in 1903, however, the principles and reasonings in this book, still apply to our lives now. Before reading this book, you should resolve to forget everything you know about how life should be lived and instead adopt the thinking that thought is the most powerful of all human capabilities.
